fireflies

The other night I went on a walk after the boys were in bed. By the time I got back, the fireflies were out and I thought, "Hey, Jamie's never seen fireflies! I'll wake him up and bring him out to see them for the first time! It will be magical!" So I woke him up, carried him to the living room, and asked if he'd like to go outside to see them with me. He mumbled something incoherent and within about 10 seconds was back like this:

So I guess the fireflies will have to wait.

Jacob is 4 months

Jacob turned 4 months old on Wednesday!

He had his 4 month check-up on Thursday. He now weighs 16 lbs, 1 oz, and is 26 inches long. He's just 3 oz shy of doubling his birth weight.

What's new this month:
  • Jacob's nighttime sleep has gotten significantly worse since we got back from our trip to Charleston. He goes to sleep just fine, but then he wakes up screaming after 40 minutes. When he finally goes back to sleep, he now usually wakes up again after just 3 or 4 hours and wakes up over and over throughout the night. The 8 or 9 hour stretches he was giving us up til a month or so ago seem like a distant dream.
  • He gets super distracted while nursing. Jamie's not allowed to come in the room if I'm nursing Jacob anymore. Jamie is not happy about this arrangement.
  • He can reach for things!
  • He found his toes and he's completely obsessed. His current ambition is to eat them.
  • He is totally ticklish, and he laughs and squeals and grins for us all the time. I love it. He also sometimes makes a weird noise that sounds like growling. It is kind of disturbing.
  • We can see/feel the beginnings of teeth buds but I definitely think Jamie is going to win earliest teether. Jacob would need to get a tooth within the week to beat him, and I don't see that happening.
  • He drools all over everything and has been blowing a lot of spit bubbles lately.
  • This isn't new but I didn't mention it previously: This baby almost never spits up at all! It is so strange after Jamie! Not complaining, though :)
  • He went to the beach for the first time and doubled the number of states he's visited to. He has now been to Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina.

We sure love this baby!

More pictures from the last month:

Jakelangelo :) Guess whose idea this was.
Reaching means he can play with toys a little bit.
and of course by "play with" I mean "put in his mouth"
Jamie dressed Jacob up like a firefighter.
toes!
first time in the Jumperoo. Jamie was more excited about it than Jacob was :)
Jacob's ALWAYS fussy at dinnertime and won't let us put him down. We pulled out the high chair to see if sitting at our level would help at all. I think it has a little, but just a little.

Charleston {days 4 & 5}

We spent Thursday at the beach in Isle of Palms. It was just the best day.

Jamie and Thomas built a fortified castle with a huge moat and then enjoyed watching the tide destroy it. Jamie said that was his favorite part of the day -- that, and going out in the waves with Daddy.

my view while Jacob napped on me
here comes the tide!

I don't think I could love this picture any more than I do.

Jamie must have spent hours digging around this second castle. Even while we were sitting and relaxing he kept on working. I was worried he'd get bored at some point but he never did!

still at it!

We all got burgers and fries for dinner at a restaurant super close to the beach. It really hit the spot.

Seriously. The best day.

We had tentatively been planning to spend Friday morning in Charleston, go on a walking tour, go to a plantation...and then drive home in the afternoon. But after all the sand and sun we were a little wiped out and decided it would probably be best to have a more relaxing morning before driving back to Knoxville. After leisurely packing up and checking out of the hotel, we got breakfast at the Early Bird Diner where we had gone earlier in the week. Thomas and I both got chicken and waffles (amazing! Hands down the best waffles I've ever had) and Jamie had French toast and sausage. Our drive home was pretty terrible. Jamie was awesome, but Jacob was either asleep or screaming the entire time and even in the car he'd only nap 40 minutes. On top of that, we got stuck in FOUR traffic jams that added 2 hours to our trip. Needless to say, we were all happy to be home!

The driving part aside, it was a great trip! We hope to go back to Charleston again someday, and I look forward to more fun vacations with my little family! :)
